Režisér filmu „Emancipation“ Antoine Fuqua staví do kontrastu „400 let otroctví“ a incidentu hvězdy Willa Smithe na Oscarech a říká, že Apple TV+ neuvažovala o posunutí data premiéry filmu.
„Emancipace“ od spisovatele Billa Collage byla naplánována na vydání v roce 2022, ale předpokládalo se, že Will Smith, když na Oscarech zasáhl Chrise Rocka, znamenal, že ji Apple odloží. Odrůda dokonce řekl, že to byla „nevyřčená pravda“, že Apple chtěl film od této události distancovat. Bylo však také řečeno, že filmy „Luck“ a „The Greatest Beer Run Ever“ byly kritickým zklamáním a Apple měl jako kandidát na Oscara pouze „Emancipation“.
Režisér filmu Antoine Fuqua v novém rozhovoru popírá, že kdy došlo k nějakému váhání, kdy drama o otroctví vydat.
„Nikdy se mnou a Applem nebo mými producenty Toddem Blackem a Jonem Monem nebo Heather Washingtonovou neproběhl rozhovor o tom, že film nevyjde,“ řekl Fuqua.
Nicméně také říká, že „s Applem to byl vždy úplný rozhovor.“
„Byli velmi citliví na mě, na Willa, na všechny lidi, kteří na filmu pracovali,“ pokračoval. „Bylo to spíš o tom, ‚My[re assessing everything. We’re seeing what people are saying.'“
„They were very careful about it,“ said Fuqua. „Then we showed the film to some people and their reactions were really positive, and we discussed it along the way.“
Fuqua may not be clear about how Apple may have considered delaying the film, but he is certain that releasing it now is the right choice.
„My conversation was always, ‚Isn’t 400 years of slavery, of brutality, more important than one bad moment?'“ he says. „We were in Hollywood, and there’s been some really ugly things that have taken place, and we’ve seen a lot of people get awards that have done some really nasty things.“
„So I think Apple considered all those things, and we discussed a lot of those things,“ continued Fuqua. „Then a decision was made by the people in charge of distribution and the money at Apple — and I’m grateful, I’m really grateful.“
„Emancipation“ will be released in theatres on December 2, 2022, before then streaming on Apple TV+ from December 9.
